20 In 5 -- Vol. III -- Something More

By John Ogden

Oddly enough,
the Universe could be like this....
When you say that the universe is big, you don't really know just how big. It's big, though. Huge

The woman on the corner who rattles her bag of dirty bottles screams that the universe is in her head, that it expands faster and faster against the inside of her skull, and that it threatens to come roaring out of her ears if she doesn't stop them up with newspaper. Like waves, the shoes and boots and flip-flops trod past, some fast, some slow, steady in their courses. Heavy clouds of wealth sprinkle pennies into a grimy ball-cap she keeps at her feet, pass reassured that the watering they've done is enough to keep her fields seeded, her broken teeth busy.

There is a day in the working blur of things when the newspaper no longer comes. The digital revolution has killed the presses and left nothing but the glow of screens in its wake. The shoes and boots and flip-flops march on. The clouds of wealth continue sprinkling pennies. The woman on the corner gathers sheets of previous days' papers, twists them, shoves them in her ears.

A week passes, moves as all weeks do. Fourteen beers, thirty hours of faces making monkey language on glowing screens. Men in coffee shops crack sheets of silicon as if they were newspapers. A baker signs a contract of light and leaves for the world of eco-packaging. The last hold-out of online billing relieves the last postman of his job. The sky lightens, darkens again as the woman on the corner stares at her last sheet of newspaper, licks a finger before checking in hopes of finding another piece perhaps stuck stealthily beneath it.

When I wake in the morning,...
