20 In 5 -- Vol. III -- A Bullet For Hundred Miles Wide

By Brian Middleton, Jr.

I know the day I'll die, she thinks,
as she leaps out over

the edge of the building.
Gravity takes her then, and she careens toward the concrete below at the speed of a meteor. She is a bullet, four hundred miles wide, with no hope of missing her target. For a moment she panics, as if something has gone wrong. And then she hears it. A perfect sound makes its way to her now content ears, and her heart skips a beat. It's the telltale song of fabric being manhandled by the speed of a fall.  Or a dive.

She twists her body, and the air pushes and pulls at her falling mass. She faces upward to the sky and sees his silhouette. Her muscles sing a song of praise underneath her skin; the blood in her veins keeps the time with it's beating.  She sees his strong arm swing out to the side, flinging some weighted object out to the left of him.  She notices that the object is in the shape of a claw, and to it is attached a nylon line. Her hero pulls the line tight just moments after the weight finds purchase and suddenly she feels his body against hers. It's warm and beautiful, and every other detail is lost to her senses as she holds tight to the body she loves, and takes the whole of him in. She does not notice when he shifts his weight slightly, causing them to travel in an arc toward a nearby rooftop. It barely registers in her mind when their feet touch solid ground.

"Again?" he asks, and in his voice there is a story of disappointment. He loves her, although he has not yet said as much.
